Cooking in your Campervan!
Preparing and cooking food on your road trip can be a hugely rewarding experience. Stop wherever your heart desires and russell up a gourmet lunch for two, or a one pot meal for all the family. Experienced campers know all too well that some pre-planning before you leave home can make your trip so much more enjoyable. Here are our top tips to help you on your way!
Packing and storage
Tupperware is your new best friend, use for storing dried foods such as oats, cereal, rice, etc., not only does this keep your ingredients fresh, its easy to stack and more importantly discourages unwelcome visits from little furry friends. You want to avoid attracting mice at all costs, they have a tendency to nibble on your wiring which can have very costly consequences.
Fill your freezer
Remove all packaging from your meats and freeze in a ziplock bag, you’ll be amazed how much more you can fit in your freezer this way. If you are taking pre frozen boxed foods remove from our packaging first. Make sure to pack the freezer compartment tight. Fill any odd spaces, so the freezer door will JUST shut tight!
The most important time to BBQ!
Unless you want to be welcomed first thing in the morning by the aroma of the salmon you cooked three days ago, we strongly advise that you cook pervasive smelling foods alfresco. There's a simple way to cook these without smelling the van out. Wrap fish in tinfoil parcels and cook using the outdoor grill. For currys, combine your favourite homemade (premade) curry sauce with pieces of freshly cooked chicken, mix together and wrap in tin foil parcels, cook on a gentle heat on the BBQ.
Clean up quickly after you eat to avoid residual food being left around. A good tip is to wipe everything with kitchen towel before washing up, to save hot water and avoid food particles going into the grey water tank and causing odours. Wash the cleanest dishes first and greasier ones last.
